Lot Essay

John Hunter (1728-1793), Anatomist and Surgeon, studied at St. Bartholomew's.In 1753 he was appointed one of the 'Masters of Anatomy'of the Surgeon's Corporation. In 1776 he was appointed Surgeon Extroadinary to King George III.
This portrait is based on the 1785 portrait by Reynolds (Royal College of Surgeons).Another copy by John Jackson is at the National Portrait Gallery, and there is a further version at St. Mary Hall, Oxford.
