Lot Essay

This important painting was the result of the development of a group of paintings and watercolours excuted during the 1930's, where the artist maintains the common theme in his paintings, the female form, while introducing a secondary organic link between woman and the flower.

This group of work successfully incorporates a form of abstraction into a period in Fergusson's work which explores the more sexual element of the woman by developing of the classical link between the flower, and since the 17th century, the rose, as a symbol of feminine beauty and fertility.

This period in the artist's work referred to as "Femme Fleur" analysed the structure of the flower and more particularly Fuschias, Gloxinia and Roses by adapting the line and folds of these flowers in a Celtic and intertwined treatment to represent sexual organs.
