T. E. Lawrence's first appearance in print. He worked as an archaeologist at the site of Carchemish in Mesopotamia from 1911-14 under the direction of his lifelong friend D. G. Hogarth. The Report on the excavations was published in 3 volumes, in 1914, 1921 and 1952, although Lawrence contributed directly only to the introductory section of the first part. See the Preface to Part I.
