The Yellow Book was conceived on New Year's Day 1894 by Beardsley and the novelist, Henry Harland, at Harland's house in the Cromwell Road. As art editor, Beardsley was only responsible for the art work of the first four volumes, and did not contribute to the magazine after his sacking by John Lane during the production of volume V. The title page illustration to volume I (illustrated above), which caused such critical disapproval, was inspired by Bomvet's account of how Glück composed his two Iphigenias and his Orpheus, sitting at a piano in the middle of a field, "a bottle of champagne on each side ... I tremble to think what critics would say had I introduced these bottles of champagne," Beardsley wrote in a rare public letter to the Pall Mall Budget on April 27, "and yet we do not call Glück a decadent."
