POE, EDGAR ALLAN -- A set of Beardsley's Four Illustrations to the Works of Edgar Allan Poe, [Chicago: Stone & KImball, 1894-95], on Japanese vellum from line-blocks after Beardsley, each plate 203 x 130mm. With a typed letter from Herbert S. Stone & Co., The House Beautiful, The Chap-Book, Chicago, June 10th 1898, to F.H. Day, 9 Pinckney St., Boston, Mass., signed by M.E. Stone Jnr., stating: "Owing to the fact that I have expected my brother back from abroad ever since a month ago, I have neglected to acknowledge your letter to him concerning the collection of Beardsley pictures which you need. Unfortunately only four of the advertised eight pictures were ever made by Beardsley for our edition of Poe, and in purchasing the set from Stone & Kimball's effects, we did not acquire any of them. I am sure I do not know where the plates or the original are, but imagine that they must have been sold off with the office furniture after Kimball's failure."
An interesting letter in view of the fact that the plates must have come to light subsequently, Herbert Stone republishing them in 1901 (see next lot).
