MAGRE, Maurice. La Montée aux Enfers. Edition illustrée de douze eaux-fortes et vingt-trois dessins par Edouard Chimot, Paris: Le Livre du Biblophile "L' Edition", 1920, 4°, limited to 590 copies, this number 170 of 500 copies on papier vergé d' Arches a la forme, PRESENTATION COPY, half title inscribed by the author to Pierre Picard and with four line verse in his hand, 12 colour-printed etched plates, illustrations (tissue guard to first plate slightly torn), unbound as issued in original wrappers.
The first work to be illustrated by Chimot, a task he had begun for his own pleasure some years before when a copy of the book was sent to him in the trenches. This copy with an inscription by Magre on half title, and manuscript verse in the author's hand reading: "Je prefere la femme au regard immodeste Les Peines de mes soirs, le plaisir déchirant Le fumier familier où croit l' arbre terrestre Et la vie fecund qui m' a fait le coeur grand. M.M." The coloured etching, reproduced on page ..., illustrates "Le secret perdu."
