Lot Essay

William Moorcroft (1765?-1825) was appointed veterinary surgeon to the Bengal Army in 1808. He travelled extensively in central Asia breaking much new ground and was the first British person to cross the Himalaya. It was after this trip that the manuscript appears to have been commissioned. He died after being attacked by robbers on his return from Bokhara.
