With the Royal motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense, mounted on the ribbon in paste-set lettering, a label accompanies this piece which reads A piece of the ribbon of the garter worn by Prince Charles Stuart at the Battle of Culloden,
in glazed rectangular case
Provenance
The complete ribbon was given by Mr. John Hay, the Prince's Secretary to Mr. Robert Barclay who had fought with the Jacobite army. By him it was presented in about 1777 to a Miss Edgar who became Mrs. Bishop-Watson of Montrose who gave this piece to Mr. Robert Chambers
