The letter reads:
Your letter of ye 20th December is the more agreeable to me, as I am convinced of your zeal and loyalty; your good wishes are very acceptable both to me and the Queen; in return be assured of my particular esteem and protection, Your sincere friend, Charles R. Rome y. 19th Jany. 1774, and underneath, Colonel Nairne

Lot Essay

Henry Nairne was an officer in the French army and spent 56 years in exile as a result of his part played in the '45 rebellion. He was with Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the time of the Prince's death and only returned to Scotland in 1802 at the age of 75.
