Lot Essay

Margaret Oliphant was born at Gask on 29th July 1770 and married Alexander Keith of Ravelston on 11th April 1811, dying on 10th September 1847. She was the fourth daughter of Lawrence Oliphant 2nd Baronet and sister of Carolina later Lady Nairne.

Lawrence Oliphant 2nd Baronet was born on 25th May 1724 and joined the Jacobite forces with his father 1st Baron Oliphant and Laird of Gask and was Aide-de-Comp to Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the Battle of Prestonpans. He was, with his father, at Falkirk and Culloden and escaped with him in October 1746. He refused to apply for a pardon and continued to reside abroad until 1763, when he returned with his father whom he succeeded four years later. He remained loyal to the Stuarts to the end and never accepted nor recognised the Hanoverian Government. He died at Gask 1st January 1792.
