The purpose of grissets was for the manufacture of rushlights. Once the tallow was molten, the rush wicks were dipped, once or twice and then placed on open bark to dry.

A cast iron grisset, the boat-shaped pan supported on tripod angular legs, English, 17th century -- 9in. (22.8cm.) wide.
