This rare printed pamphlet is extremely important with regard to the History of Golf.
Perth is recorded as a centre for golf in 1620 and 1878, and a proposal was made to form a 'club' at Perth in 1824 on lines similar to one already in existance at St. Andrews. The club was duly formed and it was agreed to play two meetings a year, in 1828 the members started monthly competitions and by 1833 had received Royal patronage, the first time in history Royal patronage was bestowed on the game. Not only did the club receive Royal patronage that year but also revised the rules of the game in regard to Perth, this task was taken in hand by Major Murray Belshes, a member of The Ancient Club of St. Andrews and when his report on the rules was issued it was adopted 'en bloc'. Major Murray Belshes was elected Captain of The Royal and Ancient Club and re-elected the following year.
The pamphlet contains a list of members, the regulations for the internal management of the club and details twenty-four rules for the game of golf, which form the basis of the rules we use today and interestingly states that the Perth Society Members would play medals competitions on the North Inch Course which consisted of nine holes, to be played twice, to give eighteen holes (Rule XX). It was printed at the expense of the Society for its, one hundred and twelve members.
