A Japanese roironuri ground lacquer rectangular box and cover with canted corners and silver rims, decorated in hiramakie and scattered nashiji with a basket of flowers including chrysanthemums and bamboo on a simulated wooden table top within a border of key-frets and swastikas, the sides with with geometric patterns and a band of scrolling foliage, the interior decorated with two raised kinji ground shaped panels of a cockerel and two chicks below another panel with pine issuing from rockwork above a river, all on a nashiji ground (rubbing, chips and cracks) -- 8½.in.wide, 17th/18th century.
