The present drawing relates to a series of studies executed by Klimt for his celebrated canvas Die Jungfrau of 1913 (N. and D. no. 184; fig. 1), housed today in Národní Galerie in Prague.

Klimt looked to various artists and media for inspiration, and there is little doubt that French sculpture, and most notably Auguste Rodin, had some influence on his art. Rodin visited Vienna on numerous occasions, and displayed his sculptures in five of the Vienna Secession exhibitions. When the Secession was founded (as the Austrian Artist's Union), Rodin was elected as a corresponding member and was already on show in their first exhibition in 1898. In its ninth exhibition in 1901, the Secession included fourteen works by Rodin, while in 1902 the artist's union Manes in Prague organised an important exhibition of his work.

Berta Zuckerkandl, one of the pillars of the Vienna Secession, wrote her recollection of Rodin's visit to Austria for the show, "When Rodin came to Vienna in 1902, I took him to see Klimt. Rodin whose drawings are among the most grandiose résumés of body and movement, recognised a peer. Turning to me, he said: 'These masterly drawings remind me of Baudelaire's saying: 'Le dessin de création est le privilège du génie'" (quoted in C. M. Nebehay, Gustav Klimt. From drawing to painting, London, 1994, p. 114).
