A LARGE VERTE-IMARI ARMORIAL DISH
Circa 1720
Painted in underglaze blue and enamelled in iron-red, green and gilt with the arms and crest for Stanley impaling Granville, the well with green diaper-pattern reserved with floral cartouches and the border with four large and four small flower sprays below the narrow scroll band at the rim, short hairline with associated rim restoration
15½ in. (39.5 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This service was made for Sir John Stanley of Grange Gorman, near Dublin who married Anne Granville. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p.189. A dish from this service, from the collection of the late Dr. Robert Doyle, was sold in our New York Rooms, 23 January 2001, lot 130 (part lot).
