Lot Essay

A similar programme is illustrated in Howarth, Thomas, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Modern Movement, London, 1977, p.18-19; and a further example was sold from the Dr. Thomas Howarth Collection, Christie's London, 17th Feb. 1994, lot 85.

Mackintosh seems to have been closely involved with the Glasgow Architectural Association during the early 1890's when he a gave a number of lectures to its members. The programme is one of the earliest documented "Spook School" designs sharing with the work of other members of the four an imagery of malevolent birds and menacing organic forms
