with a moulded twin plank top and panelled sides, the triple panel front with a foliate filled lunette frieze with gouged moulding beneath, the lower rail and the stile feet all profusely gouge carved with a cable motif and punch decorated -- 51½in. (131cm.) wide, 27½in. (70cm.) high, 21½in. (55cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The detail in the carving would strongly suggest a Salisbury origin with the distinctive cable motif in particular. See Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture the British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.448-454 for a fuller discussion of this tradition and comparable items.
