American Beauty, Sam Mendes' first feature film, was a huge box office and critical success, which is reflected in the array of awards for which it was nominated, and won, including eight Academy Awards, winning five including Best Picture, Best Director for Sam Mendes and Best Actor for Kevin Spacey, and thirteen BAFTAs, winning six including Best Film, Best Actor and Best Actress for Annette Bening.
