Lot Essay

The shape of the present sugar-bowl and cover is similar to that of the pot a sucre 'a la reine' but slightly taller and narrower. See Tamara Préaud and Antoinette Fäy-Hallé, Porcelains de Vincennes, les origines de Sèvres, Exhibition Catalogue, Grand Palais, Paris, 14 October 1977 - 16 January 1978, no. 193

See David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18th Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, Loondon, 1997, p.85. The as-yet unattributed painter's mark of a Y is found on pieces dated 1752-1758 painted with landscapes, birds and chinoiseries. It was tentatively ascribed to Pierre-François Yvernel by Sven Eriksen and Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, p. 167. no.135. The mark is also similar to those used by Edmé-François Bouillat and his wife Genévieve-Louise (Thévenet) Bouillat, both of whom specialized in flower painting.
