Lot Essay

These exceptional fauteuils en cabriolet, probably Lyonnaise in origin, are a superb example of the menuisiers' art in the 'pittoresque' style, their serpentine frames remarkably retaining their original polychrome-decoration that mirrors the Beauvais floral tapestry covers . The coup de fouet arm supports and the construction of the back are reminiscent of Piere Nogaret's (maître in 1745) chairs, whereas the carving on the legs are very similar to the work of the Parisian menuisier Jean-Baptiste Cresson (maître in 1741).
