Mid-18th Century
Each with a molded cartouche-shaped backrest carved with flowerheads, shell motifs and foliage, the padded armrests back and seat, covered in red and white floral-patterned silk upholstery à chassis, on voluted supports, the serpentine-fronted seat carved to match the backrest, on cabriole legs ending in leaf-carved scrolled toes, regilt, one with the numbers 6, 5 and 3, the other 4, 3 and 6 to the underside indicating that they were originally part of a larger set (2)

The form of this pair of fauteuils with the undulating crestrail, scroll to the arm support and generous proportions, is similar to chairs produced by the celebrated 18th century menuisier Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard (Maître in 1766). A closely related example is illustrated in P.Kjellberg Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 833, fig. B.
