PROOFS -- An interesting collection of proofs and loose plates, including:
a) "The Toilet of Salomé," first printing of the suppressed design, on Japanese vellum, 178 x 128mm. (7 x 5in.), inscribed at lower margin "no. 8: of 75 copies," with single-leaf prospectus for this "hitherto unpublished drawing," stating: "Few collectors are aware of the existence of a 'first' state ... the price, at present, is one guinea per copy, which will be raised to 30/- when half the issue is sold" [In fact, a Smithers' forgery, being the first issued printing after the suppressed design, preceeded by the original suppressed proofs at time of publication]
b) Two grotesques of a cardinal and a devil, facing in opposite directions, printed in red on a single sheet, signed and inscribed by Leonard Smithers on verso: "This first issue of two sketches by Aubrey Beardsley is limited to 25 copies in black ink and 10 copies in red ink. No. 5," sheet size 220 x 285mm.
c) Four proofs with titles and attribution to Beardsley in the hand of A.E. Gallatin (in three cases out of four, the attribution is on a separate slip of paper mounted on the lower margin of each plate), consisting of: 1. The "Ex-libris of John Lumsden Propert" [Reade 350], 2. "Night Piece" [Read 351] 3. "L' Education sentimentàle" [Reade 349], and 4. "Miss Patrick Campbell" [Reade 347], all used in volume I of The Yellow Book.
d) Bodley Head engraver's proofs, including: 1. "How Queen Guenever Made Her a Nun," two copies [Reade 150] 2. "John and Salome," a suppressed design [Reade 290] 3. "Frontispiece to The Wonderful history of Virgilius the Sorcerer of Rome" [Reade 262] 4. The design used for a poster advertising children's books [Reade 335], all approximately 208 x 131mm.
e) Four pulls of humorous illustrations, thought to be early designs by Beardsley, sheet size 105 x 146mm.
f) A caricature print of Max Beerbohm used in the Bon-Mots series, sheet size 235 x 180mm. [Reade ....]
