GOODEN, Stephen (1892-1955). A one page typed letter from The Cottage, Warwick Road, Bishop's Stortford, 16th January 1932, to Stuart Donnithorne, stating: "I am very sorry to have to give a disappointing reply to your enquiry about a book-plate, but I have almost given up doing them. They are very troublesome things to do satisfactorily owing to their personal nature, and I have so many enquiries for them that if I undertook them all I should have no time for anything else, whereas there are many other kinds of work which give me far more scope for expressing my own ideas. This being so I only do them when clients are prepared to pay the quite fantastic price of one hundred guineas"; together with 4 further letters and a Christmas card from Gooden; 2 letters from John Buckland Wright and Paul Nash; and several items of printed ephemera.
