The Property of a Collector
This collection of vases, candelabra etc. was formed by Andrew Carnegie, Pittsburgh, Penna, U.S.A. For the Carnegie-Mellon Museum, established in 1901.
The bronze castings were made for Andrew Carnegie from antiquities at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. The originals comprise the spoils of excavations at Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabie, cities which were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.
It is beleived the collection was cast by the Neapolitan foundry Sabatino D'Angelis, many of the pieces have their original foundry labels and the Carnegie collection numbers are intact.
A bronze circular bowl, with central boss and inverted flat rim, the twin reeded loop handles with Bacchic mask terminals, the base with maker's label inscribed SABATINO DE ANGELIS & FILS, NAPLES -- 15 5/8in. (39.7cm.) diam.
