Trajan (Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, Roman Emperor A.D. 98 - 117)
A Spaniard by birth and a soldier by profession, Trajan was adopted as successor to Rome's elderley emperor, Nerva. Trajan's empire building skills were universally acclaimed and he was soon given the title of Optimus Princeps which appears on his coins and monuments. The commemorative column records his acheivements in the spiral releif frieze.
