H.M.S. Thunderer, 2,279 tons, was a 2nd Rate ship-of-the-line built at Woolwich and launched there on 22 September 1831 after eight and a half years on the stocks. Measuring 196 feet in length, with a 52 foot beam, she mounted 84 guns and her first recorded action was the bombardment of Beirut on 10 September 1840. This signified the start of the successful operations against Mehemet Ali which culminated in the fall of Acre, at which Thunderer also participated, on 4 November. De-rated to a target vessel in May 1863, she was renamed first Comet (in 1869) and then Nettle the following year, and survived until sold for breaking in November 1901.
