Lot Essay

On the occasion of the marriage of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, Queen Victoria sent the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert (II) to bring the bride to England. She embarked at Flushing to find her cabin filled with roses sent by her future husband, and greatly enjoyed the smooth crossing under the escort of H.M.S. Warrior and other vessels. Reaching the Nore on 6 March, the yacht then anchored off margate for the nightm before proceeding up the Thames estuary to Gravesend the following day where Princess Alexandra came ashore to great popular acclaim.
