Lot Essay

Westernland, 5,736 tons was built by Laird's of Birkenhead for the Belgian Red Star Line in 1883. A single-screw steamer capable of 14 knots, she was one of the earliest steel ships on the North Atlantic and had the unusual distinction of being built in a dry-dock.Her maiden voyage was from Antwerp to New York in November 1883 and she sailed this same route until 1901 when she transferred to the Liverpool to Philadelphia service of the American Line.Apart from a brief return to her former route in 1906-07, she remained with the Philadelphia Service and was eventually scrapped in 1912.
