Lot Essay
The battleship H.M.S. King George V, 38,000 tons, was laid down at Vickers-Armstrong's in 1937, launched in February 1939 and completed in December 1940. Impressively armed with 10-14in. guns, she could make 29 knots at full power and carried a complement of 1,640 men. Distinguished service during the Second World War included the search for and sinking of the Bismarck in May 1941 as well as the final campaign leading to the Japanese surrender in September 1945. Recommissioned as Flagship Home Fleet after the War ended, she was later placed in Reserve and broken up in 1959.
