WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (1874-1965)
A collection of four, one-page typed letters, signed, all to Edward Martell, three from Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 12th April 1955, 6th January 1956, 28th April 1958, the other from 28 Hyde Park Gate, London S.W.7., 25th March 1957, thanking him for: "the beautifully bound records of the contributors to my 80th Birthday Fund...I realize that a great deal of work and thought has gone into compiling these volumes, and I would like to send my warm thanks to all who have helped to produce it;" together with a telegram from Churchill to Mr. Martell and another item related to the "Winton Churchill Birthday Trust."
Provenance: Edward Martell, the vendors father, was one of the Trustees on the Committee for "The Winston Churchill Birthday Trust."
Churchill gave him these books in gratitude for organising and thinking of the Birthday Fund for his 80th birthday to which over half a million pounds was given by thankful members of the public. (6)
