MAHATMA GANDHI (1869-1948)
A pair of imitation-tortoiseshell framed spectacles with circular lenses and straight sides in a period case; a Mabie, Todd & Co. Swan No. 8 fountain pen, the compostion body with herring-bone decoration and gilt clip, in maker's cardboard carton, purported to have been given to U Maung Maung Ji (1900-1973) by Mahatma Gandhi; together with a large quantity of personal letters, press photographs and ephemera relating to Maung Ji, including a one-page typed letter, signed by Richard Attenborough's secretary, Gladys Barnes, referring to the spectacles and fountain pen.

Lot Essay

U Maung Maung Ji, a trained barrister, was born in Rangoon (Burma). He was educated and trained as an occultist in India by Mrs. Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater, became involved in Burma's Independence Movement and worked with Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Nehru on the All India Congress Committee. He also worked with Attlee, Lord Petick-Lawrence and Hugh Gaitskell in the British socialist movement.
