JOHNNY ROTTEN An autograph letter and two autograph notes, signed, [n.d. but 1978], telling the fan to Ignore the other Letters, coz they're fakes. Not really by me, but by other famous folks such as Big Ben and Rupert Bear..All the other letters mention bells...I'm sorry the other letters had to be included, but Malcolm made me do [it] to perpetuate the rumour that I'm really just a spent bellringer and not a rock singer (and poet!) You see we really tried to be the new Monkees, but Steve and Paul just wouldn't have it...Just before the break up I'd written a ten part opera featuring nothing but bells of all shapes and sizes. The others refused to play along. Alas being a man of strong will I had to leave to save my credibility...Keep on playing Tubullar [sic] Bells, Hate from John Rotten. 1p. cut into two halves; the two other notes similarly cut into two.
