This painting was the first wildlife picture the artist executed
on his return from Africa in 1962. During his visit to Africa as a guest of the Royal Air Force in Nairobi, he was asked to paint an elephant rather than an aeroplane and this changed his career overnight. On his return to England, David Shepherd submitted this painting to the Tryon and Moorland Gallery and although the Gallery were initially sceptical over it's commercial worth, it was to become the first of many wildlife paintings by the artist to be sold.
