In the above match, played at Goodison Park on 11th April 1896, before 21,280 spectators, the Football League defeated the Scottish League 5-1, with goals from Devey, Athersmith, Goodall and Becton (2).

Frances Becton was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1873 and joined Liverpool from Preston North End in 1895. At Liverpool he won a Division 2 Championship medal in 1895-96 and played for the Football League on two occasions. Becton also made two full England International appearances and in 1898 he joined Sheffield United
