The infamous 'Battle of Highbury' was played on 14th November 1934 and was notable for several reasons. These included the tactics of the Italian team, the tackling of Wilf Copping, the ferocious shots of Eric Brook and the fact that no fewer than seven members of the England team comprised Arsenal players. In an ill-tempered match the Italian centre-half Monti broke a bone in his foot after less than two minutes and the England captain Eddie Hapgood's nose was broken by a flying elbow from an Italian player. In the first-half England's attacking was forceful and they ended the first period 3 goals up, with goals from Brook (2) and Drake, with no reply. Indeed, Brook should have had a first-half hat-trick but he missed a penalty early in the game. In the second-half Meazza scored two goals and only the exceptional goalkeeping display by Frank Moss prevented the Italians from scoring more.
