He joined Huddersfield Town from Worksop Town in 1930 and appeared in the F.A.Cup final in 1938, before being transferred to Sunderland in December 1945. In March 1947 he joined Leeds United as a player/coach, retiring from playing in May 1948. Willingham also played on six occasions for the Football League.
