A modern two-day Marine Chronometer with electrical contacts, the silvered dial signed and numbered R.F. Whitten NEWCASTLE N.S.W No.23685, Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds dial with cut-away sector for viewing electrical contacts, subsidiary up-and-down dial, blued steel hands, Earnshaw escapement, Mercer flat strip spring detent, cut bi-metallic balance, palladium helical balance spring, four wheel with "half minutes" make/break electric contact assembly, brass bowl and gimbal, in 2-tier glazed mahogany box, all brasswork finished in matt gold laquer, with outer guard box -- 6¾ x 7¼in (17.2 x 18.5 cm)
NOTE: This chronometer was made in 1963 by Thomas Mercer Ltd. It was fitted by them on the ore-carrier 'MITTAGONG' which belonged to Bulkships Pty of Melbourne, Australia. it was used as the master clock controlling a seris of slave clocks in the MERCER 'controlled electric' system.
