Lot Essay

Lists the mean position of 3,222 stars, obtained by correcting for atmospheric refraction, precession, observation, nutation and instrumental error, about 60,000 observations made by James Bradley and his assistant, Nathaniel Bliss, between 1750 and 1762. The position of the stars had never before been given with such accuracy, and the work, which constitutes Bessel's first major contribution to the science, marks the beginning of modern astronomy.
