Lot Essay

Baer's two important works studying the embryology of higher animals and heralding the discovery of the human ovum. He is best known for establishing the "germ-layer theory" and, with Cuvier, he is the founder of modern morphology. Remak's work is a simplification of Baer's classification of the germ layers.
