Lot Essay

The original Faun is first recorded in a receipt for its restoration dated 6 June 1628. The property of Cardinal Francesco Barberini. Reputedly discovered at Castel S. Angelo, work on the fortification of which had begun in 1624, at the instigation of the Cardinals uncle Pope Urban VIII.
