Lot Essay

Caldecourt was the subject of Anderson's second cricketing lithograph, published by the artist and Richard Dark on 20 May 1850 [Down & West 2] but he is also one of four subjects in Sketches at Lord's No. 12 published by the artist and Frederick Lillywhite on 1st March 1852 [Down & West 12b]. The above watercolour is a study for this later print where the umpire is less somberly dressed and stands in a more relaxed attitude, though with his top hat on his head rather than in his hands. The use of colouring in the watercolour is, however, very different from the print, the umpire's dress being of light cream tones while he sports a yellow handkerchief rather than a white one in his jacket pocket.
