James Mathews-Duncan, M.D., F.R.S. (1826-1890) was assistant to Sir James Simpson and was the first person ever rendered unconsious through the use of chloroform. He was Lecturer on Midwifery at St. Bartholomew's, London, and President of the Obstetrical Society of London.
