Further details
It is most likely that this chair was sold at Kitley House, Christie's House Sale, 19th and 20th October 1987, lot 76. A bill of sale dated 1857 referring to Kitley survives from this little known cabinet maker.
An entry probably refering to this chair reads "A Spanish mahogany scotch armchair on castors and french polished, the back stuffed with all horsehair and covered hardgrain morocco #4-15-"
Rough's predecessor, Thomas Paul & Co. is listed in the Dictionary of English Furniture Maker's 1660-1840, Beard and Gilbert, FHS. By 1855 the new company was established at no 5 Ludgate Hill, Blackfriars.
