the white king stamped JAQUES LONDON, (one black rook missing, a knight replaced and 5 pawns replaced), kings, black queen and white rook with damaged finials -- king 3½in. (9cm.), pawn 1½in. (4cm.); in original velvet lined mahogany box, the sliding cover with a green label JAQUES & SON, LONDON; with a rosewood and maple chess board

Lot Essay

This set is an earlier example as Jaques signature appears only on the white king until about 1890, but from then it appears on both kings.
