elaborately carved, the oval plinths with flowers and foliate scrolls, the figures in traditional costume, the rooks depicted as elephants with tapering castellated mounts surmounted by central flags, the knights depicted by figures holding spears and shields on horseback, the figural pawns holding spears and shields or guns -- king 5½in. (14cm.), pawn 2¾in. (7cm.); accompanied by a book By Emile Katz, HISTORY OF CHESSMEN, which the set is illustrated as XXXIV
