Indian, 19th century
the former probably from Berhampur, (missing green king, minor chips), all pieces with foliate carved bulbous stems on domed bases, the rooks of tapering castellated form -- king 5¼in. (13.5cm.), pawn 3in. (7.5cm.) high; the later probably from Vizagapatam (missing green queen, white knight and pawn, white king broken at stem, three rooks missing flags, chips to most pieces), all pieces with tiers of radiating lancer leaves bases, kings with gallery and pierced bulbous stems, knights as horse's heads, the mane carved to one side, rooks of concave castlellated form -- king 4½in. (11.5cm.), pawn 2¼in. (5.5cm.) (2)
