maker's mark probably that of Abraham Portal, 1764
Of baluster form and on a rising circular foot, the spout cast with scrolls and leaves, the ivory scroll handle issuing from volute sockets, the domed cover with stand-away hinge and spiral fluted bud finial, with bright cut engraving to either side of ribbon tied garlands suspending a central oval cartouche
10 1/4in. (26cm.)

Abraham Portal was apprenticed to Paul de Lamerie in 1740. He is one of the few goldsmiths to appear in The Dictionary of National Biography on account of his literary activities. Portal's work , as may be expected from his flirting with the muse, is fairly rare, but shows on occasions a reasonable accomplishment. cf Grimwade, p630.
