A terrestrial library globe, diameter 19¼ inches (49cm), overall height 23½ inches (60cm). The globe made up of 2 sets of 12 gores, with two polar calottes, hand coloured in outline, title set in a decorative cartouche in lower Atlantic, 2 additional descriptive cartouches, one with decorative turkish supporters holding a quadrant and staff, numerous descriptive texts recording explorations, the seas filled with sea monsters, ships and mermaids, compass rose, the Pacific showing the exploratory tracts of Chaumont, Tasman, Quires, and Le Maire and Magellan, gores lightly varnished. (Slightly rubbed and soiled, a few sections rubbed with minor loss). Metal pinions, wooden meridian circle, the globe mounted in an Italian wooden stand, the octagonal horizon bar supported by 4 tapered legs with carved cross-stretchers and centre post.
The last reissue of Greuter's 49 cm globe first issued in 1632. These early globes were copied in large part from Blaeu's 68 cm globe. After Greuter's death in 1638 the globes were reissued by Giovanni Battista de Rossi and later by his heirs in 1695. Finally the copper plates for the gores came into the hands of another firm in Rome, R.C.A. who reissued the globes.
