According to information gathered when the pot was collected in Toanumbu village in 1968, its history dates back to between 1920 and 1930. Patricia May and Margaret Tuckson (The Traditional Pottery of Papua New Guinea, 1982) illustrate a similar vessel photographed in situ (p.270, fig.9.106.).
Pottery traditions were dying out by 1968. May and Tuckson (op.cit.) saw only a few elderly people making pots when they visited the area.
