The 1880s' was a time of considerable change within Scottish painting during which the fundamental principles and teachings of the Royal Scottish Academy were being undermined by an active group of young artists popularly known as the Glasgow School.
Sir James Guthrie was the principle exponent of the new teachings who together with other members of the group successfully introduced to Scottish painting, the principles and techniques of European realism, and in particular by the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage.
